In the American film industry, works in which animals are used display the text ‘No animals were harmed in the making of this film’, or ‘No animals received injuries in the making of this film’ during the end credits, disclaimers which you have likely seen many times.
From long before in the United States, the American Human Association has existed as an NGO verifying that ‘No Animals Were Harmed’, and has set guidelines for the basics in animal handling and the safe use of animals in the film industry.
It cannot be said for sure that these systems originally meant for the protection of animals have been functioning totally as originally intended; but in Japan, where it is a given that there are no rules nor compliance standards for animal safety on location for films, we also feel that those in the media who try to use animals must commit to protecting them, in the real sense.
We, as “Animal Production”, as professionals in the use of animals, are taking our first steps to do something about this.
